Sposabella Bridal has a wide selection of detailed and trendy gowns that are sure to help make your special day even more memorable.

By Emma Childs

Every woman can recall a time where as a little girl, they fantasized about their wedding day with big dreams and their imagination running wild. Maybe it involved your most beloved stuffed animals acting out the service or scrapbooking  with old bridal magazine and lots of hope. Regardless to what extent, we’ve all imagined that special day. And if you ask any of these imaginative little girls what the most important part of that day would be, with dreamy eyes and a smile, they would respond, “The gown!”

If asked the same question to adults, perhaps the answer might change to love or happiness or maybe even the food (everyone has their priorities), but nevertheless, the gown that the bride chooses to make that bold step in is an integral part of any wedding day and one aspect you will never, ever forget. With that being said, a lot of thought goes into this choice and with the arrival of every new season, new trends in bridal gowns emerge and here on Cape Cod, it’s up to the local boutiques and businesses to please the new blushing brides.

Sposabella Bridal & The Cape Cod Tux,  is a local boutique that not only follow these bridal trends for gowns, but have items for the groom, bridesmaids, flower girls, mother of the bride, prom and more. In 2002, Sposabella started out as a tiny 900 sq. foot in 2002 and due to the hard work of Charlene Colon, the owner, it’s now a 3,000 sq. foot room filled with classy, upscale gowns and any other wedding fashion needs.

Sposabella’s spacious show room features several different styles of gowns to choose from.

Colon travels to Bridal Fashion Week in New York and attends the Debi Awards for bridal in Chicago. All these enable for Sposabella to keep their finger on the pulse and keep designs fresh and up to date. “Having fashion knowledge is key in staying current with today’s trends,” Colon says.

Sposabella Bridal has a few tricks up their sleeves…

Now, for this upcoming fall season, Colon has noticed one major stand out. “Some of the trends for fall are sleeves!! They are back in a big way. Short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and even long sleeves can be found on every dress silhouette,” Colon says. Even if a bride has fallen in love with a strapless gown, sleeves can be added on to create that comfortable and classy vibe. No matter tight or flouncy, short or long, sleeves are sure to be seen headed down the aisle this season.

Bohemian style has always been an easygoing and intriguing look that’s been present in fashion and now it’s taking over the bridal scene as well. (For a guaranteed swoon, search ‘bohemian wedding’ on Pinterest and be taken away to an instant romantic dreamland). For any light and flowy gowns with that perfect boho touch, Sposabella has you covered. “Sposabella Bridal has always been ahead of some trends like this one. We have been carrying Bohemian looks for years due to the nature of our beautiful Cape Cod location,” Colon says.

Overall consideration of your bridal look is important to keep in mind, and we suggest heading over to Chatham Beauty & Bridal. For over 25 years, the owner Brenda King has been creating that perfect look for brides all over the Cape.  “Chatham Beauty & Bridal offers not only gowns, veils, accessories, and intimate apparel, but a multitude of supportive apparel services like fittings, alterations, wedding planning, and makeup application,” King remarks.

Chatham Beauty & Bridal offers expert makeup application services as well.

Chatham Beauty & Bridal has many gowns to choose from no matter your aesthetic– classy, sexy, or vintage!

As well as innovative and new trends, older details are still a constant in designs. And while the details and silhouette are often the most important part of a gown, sometimes it’s the fabric itself that sells the dress. “Lace has been a hot fabric for the last couple of years and continues to be hot moving forward. Beaded or unbeaded, lace has been a popular bridal fabric since before our grandmothers were married,” Colon remarks. Chatham Beauty & Bridal has many options for classic and stylish dresses, many featuring the perfect touch of lace. Another fabric that can save the day is sheer illusion fabric. This subtle usually appears around the neckline and is paired with beading to resemble jewelry.

Sposabella Bridal has many dresses with illusion fabric to choose from.

For a more edgier and innovative bridal twist, try a glorious gown with some fun cut outs. Cut outs add a perfect amount of sexy detailing to give your dress that extra ounce of va-va-va voom. And if you’re one to play with the color spectrum and the typical bridal white just isn’t for you, try a dress in a tinted hue. Light blue or a rosy-mauve create an ethereal fantasy that will make your special day feel even more majestic.

Even though time has passed and we aren’t those young girls acting out fake ceremonies with our teddy bears, everyone has a vision for how they want their wedding day to be. And by heading to Chatham Beauty & Bridal or Sposabella Bridal & The Cape Cod Tux these idealistic dreams are sure to come true, all while staying on trend and supporting local dedicated businesses.

This strapless dress from Sposabella can be transformed into a trendy gown with sleeves with the wave of a tailor’s magic wand.

Discovering Dennis: Shopping, Eating & Atmosphere

The heart of Dennis Village is a well-known cultural center with museums and theater, but it is only recently that it has become a great shopping destination, as new and exciting shops and eateries have opened along this adorable part of Route 6A.

First Stop: Underground Bakery
Everyone knows you must fuel up for a day of shopping if you are going to go the distance. Fortunately Underground Bakery has you covered. Order up a cup of coffee or a juice to go along with your breakfast – lighter, vegan and more substantial options are available.

CQ Recommends: try the Fiesta Wrap for a super yummy, well-balanced and shopping ready meal. And grab a loaf of bread for later….

Next: Deep Blue
Head from Underground Bakery over to Deep Blue, which will be a feast for your eyes. The shop carries   unique gifts and jewelry as well both new and vintage home goods. The owners Amy and Bridget also bring their own flare and products into the shop from high quality refinished furniture to upholstery fabric and greeting cards.

CQ Recommends: Spend some time reading all of the “punny” cards designed by Amy, and try not smiling.

Next: Scout
Take a right onto Main Street and go to the newly opened Scout, a charming little shop perfect for Francophiles and to find everything you didn’t know you needed. Owner Melissa Cox carefully selects everything in the shop to create a memorable shopping experience, and to bring joy to her customers.

CQ Recommends: Just when you think you are ready to check out, take one more loop around the store to make sure you’ve seen everything – you don’t want to miss any of the cuteness!

Next: GoodFellas Gelateria

There’s too much sweetness in this area to resist, so we think it is the perfect day to have a little treat mid-shopping. Gelato is the most fashionable dessert out there, and fortunate for you fashionistas GoodFellas Gelataria recently opened on in Dennis Village offering 24 flavors and espresso, cappuccino and lattes.

CQ Recommends: A good pistachio is the mark of a great gelateria, and this one does not disappoint.

Next: Black Eel Outfitters

Keep heading West on Main Street until you get to Black Eel Outfitters where you will find well-known brands such as Prana, Columbia, Toad & Co., and Tommy Bahama, as well as everything you need for fishing, boating or going to the beach. This is where men and women (and even kids) can go to find both style and comfort from maxi dresses, flowy tops and bathing suits for her, and shorts, t-shirts and casual sneakers for him.

CQ Recommends: Check out Black Eel’s own branded clothing line that owners John and Anna Hayden introduced into the store this year – both cute and comfy styles in tees and sweatshirts

Last Stop: Relax at home or at Harvest

Who wants to cook after such hard work!? Instead grab some wine and cheese (to go with your loaf of bread) for home at the newly opened Sapori d’Italia, or stick around for local live music and a cocktail at Harvest Gallery & Wine Bar.

Finding your very own #woufit (all white outfit) on Cape Cod

by Halle Davis

One of summer’s hottest trends is the #woutfit – or an all white outfit. What better way to beat the summer heat than to dress head to toe in white? From stylish bloggers to the most influential celebrities, everyone is hopping on this trend (and even wearing it past Labor Day!).

We shopped local to try this trend a few different ways!

Formal Look:

L’Atiste “Cheyanne” Maxi Dress paired with Fly London “Yuma” Wedges

IMG_0170fly wedges

We discovered this adjustable neck maxi while browsing Isabel Boutique on Main Street Chatham and we immediately fell in love! Its length and style give it an elegant and dressy feel while the fabric keeps you cool and comfortable. Pair with two tone leather Fly London wedges from Frances Francis to elevate your look. This is the perfect outfit for a summer party or night out!

Beach Look:

Mod o doc Tee Shirt Dress paired with Havaianas Crystal Glam Flip Flops

This lightweight tee shirt dress is perfect for a day at the beach! Use as a cover up while you manage your time in the late August sun or throw it on afterwards for a bite to eat! The seam detailing on this dress gives it style while its loose fit provides comfort. To finish the look, we added Havaianas flip flops that have a crystal detail. Both pieces are available at Sundance Clothing in Chatham.

Casual Weekend Look:

Lush Perfect Box Top and Flying Monkey White Distressed Jean, worn with Perforated Leather Smoking Slipper

IMG_0165 IMG_0169soludos

This is a cute #woutfit for having fun on the weekend! The boxy and loose crepe top keeps you cool while distressed denim stays on trend. Balance out the relaxed fit of this top with skinny jeans and simple shoes. Soludos espadrille slippers are very hot this year, not to mention with perforated detail that keeps your comfortable in the summer heat. This whole outfit is available at Isabel Boutique in Chatham.

Night Out Look:

Olivaceous Krissy Strap Tank, Kut from the Kloth Catherine Boyfriend Jean, worn with Roxy Cancun sandals

For an all white outfit for a night on the town, look no further. We selected this strappy and sassy tank to be worn with white boyfriend jeans and braided sandals. While the top will add some spice to your look, the relaxed fit jeans will give your look balance and the leather braided sandals will pull everything together for a comfortable and sexy night out look! This top is available at Isabel Boutique, the jeans are available at Sundance Clothing and the sandals are available at Chatham Clothing Bar.

Ace Hole-in-One Style at Twin Brooks Golf Course

by Halle Davis

Despite having gorgeous beaches around almost every corner, Cape Cod has more to offer than sunny beach days. For the days when you’ve had your fill of the beach, try some of the Cape’s other attractions. Last weekend, we found ourselves at Twin Brooks Golf Course. While we are not expert golfers, we had no problems immersing ourselves in golf fashion and style.

Twin Brooks Golf Course is a newly renovated 18-hole course nestled right into downtown Hyannis. There’s a little something for everyone and every ability – tournaments, leagues, memberships, golf school, or just daily play. Their expertly constructed fairways and greens ensure that you can even play year round!

Bring your family and friends and try it out…even if you don’t have the skills (yet), at least you can look cute doing it!

To channel PGA tour vibes (even if you don’t have the skills), try these looks from local shops:

Look 1: Equipment Reese Blouse, Salt, Wellfleet, $268, Ella Moss Candice Shorts, Salt, Wellfleet, $138, Frye Melanie Sneaker, Puritan Cape Cod, Chatham, $148

Look 2: Equipment Kiera Blouse with Contrast Lapels, Salt, Wellfleet, $115, Woolrich Wood Dove II Skirt, Beth Bishop. Orleans, $55, Sperry Top-Sider Angelfish 2-Eye Cotton Mesh Shoe, Puritan Cape Cod, Chatham, $90

Look 3: Equipment Jody Dress, Salt, Wellfleet, $278, Frye Melanie Sneaker, Puritan Cape Cod, Chatham, $148, Look 4: Equipment Short Sleeve Slim Signature Blouse, Salt, Wellfleet, $218

Joie Barbella Shorts, Salt, Wellfleet, $148.99, Sperry Top-Sider Angelfish 2-Eye Cotton Mesh Shoe, Puritan Cape Cod, Chatham, $90

Discovering Falmouth: Shopping, Eating and Atmosphere

by Halle Davis

Tucked away in the southwest corner of the cape, Falmouth is a cozy yet vibrant town full of unexpected shops, restaurants and attractions. We decided to treat ourselves to what Falmouth has to offer for a day of shopping, eating and checking things out.

First Stop: Maison Villatte

What’s more chic than French pastries and coffee for your morning meal? Stop into this Main Street hotspot and brave the line to grab some of the best pastries on the Cape (owner Boris Villatte also co-founded PB Boulangerie in Wellfleet). Start your day of shopping in Falmouth with a decadent but not heavy treat at Maison Villatte.

CQ recommends: To channel cool French girl vibes, try the pain au chocolat or a croissant with espresso! You’ll thank us later.

Next: Liberty House

The first shopping stop for the day is Liberty House, located on Palmer Avenue. There is a cluster of quirky little shops in this area; a little something for everyone (unless you don’t like shopping!)

Liberty House is named after a non-profit cooperative women’s store that operated in New York City in the 1960’s. The shop has an eclectic selection of clothing and accessories for women.

CQ recommends: Liberty House is a great option for light sundresses and fun accessories such as anchor print scarves and leather totes.

Next: Cape Chic Company

Right around the corner from Liberty House is Cape Chic Company, a coastal lifestyle boutique. The store is located in an idyllic space, complete with a magnificent post and beam ceiling. Inside Cape Chic Company you’ll find effortless yet comfortable pieces that maintain their elegance.

CQ recommends: Cape Chic Company has a great assortment of accessories: woven jute handbags with leather handles that are perfect for the beach or farmer’s market, a curated selection of summer scarves and funky jewelry!

Lunch: Pickle Jar Kitchen

After some time shopping along Palmer Ave, check out the collection of shops, restaurants and attractions on nearby Main Street. For lunch, we stopped at Pickle Jar Kitchen, a casual spot nestled in between some of Falmouth’s best shopping! We love the warm feel and inviting atmosphere created by wooden interiors and bright light.

CQ recommends: This place has the best of both worlds – breakfast and lunch. Whatever you end up ordering, make sure to snag some of the house-made pickle chips! You can’t go wrong here – everything is made naturally with care.

Next: Board Stiff

Full from lunch and determined to walk off some calories, we set back out to shop. The first shop we popped into on Main Street, Board Stiff, is a local favorite from Falmouth to Provincetown (literally). Board Stiff has kept skaters and surfers in the Falmouth area well equipped since 2006. With an impressive range of products from paddleboards to handbags, Board Stiff is the place to shop for a beachy, summer look.

CQ recommends: With lots of fun merchandise to pick from, we suggest Board Stiff as the ideal place to buy sunglasses. Their brands include everything from Maui Jim to Gucci. From sporty to high-end, they’ve got it!

Next: Puritan Cape Cod

Puritan Cape Cod is a notable shop on Main Street Falmouth for a few reasons. For starters, Puritan opened in Plymouth, Mass. in 1919. Currently, the business has grown to include four locations. Another reason to shop at Puritan is the scope of brands and merchandise. Get the perfect Cape Cod look with classics from Vince and Eileen Fisher or preppy nautical styles from Vineyard Vines and Sperry Top-Sider.

CQ recommends: Puritan Cape Cod is the go-to destination for upscale classics. From rain boots to their very own line called Chatham Chino Company, Puritan has a distinctly tasteful point of view.

Next: Green Eyed Daisy

For a bit funkier selection, head over to Green Eyed Daisy, a women’s clothing and accessory boutique founded in 2009 by a mother-daughter team. Because they opened in the middle of the recent recession, their price points stress the importance of choice. They have a little something for everyone, from $10 earrings to designer purses.
CQ recommends: Despite having pretty much everything anybody could want, we have concluded that Green Eyed Daisy has an amazing inventory of jewelry. From simple designs to something more elaborate, Green Eyed Daisy has it and at reasonable prices.

Next: Treasure Chest Gifts

To mix things up, we head to Treasure Chest Gifts. Not only do they have women’s apparel and accessories, but they have lovely options for men, wedding gifts and home decor. Treasure Chest offers the delightfully unexpected for shoppers, everything from handmade lighthouse doll house to funky cowboy boots.

CQ recommends: Our favorite picks from Treasure Chest GIfts were the assortment of light knits and leather crossbody handbags – the perfect look for a casual night out to a beach bonfire or outdoor bar!

Next: Maxwell & Co

Our last shopping stop for the day was certainly worth the wait. We walk over to Maxwell & Co to get a taste of European opulence before the day is over. Immediately you’re struck by the elegance and sheer volume of chic clothing.

CQ recommends: If you’re looking to be transported to a luxurious yacht in the Mediterranean Sea via your outfit, give Maxwell & Co. a try. Dig around and find designer pieces on sale or indulge in something truly special, you deserve it!

Last Stop: Osteria la Civetta
After a long day of shopping, it’s time for a glass of wine. So, we head to Osteria la Civetta  (The Little Owl) which offers an authentic taste of Italy, with handmade pasta paired with fresh and locally sourced produce, meat and seafood.
The owners of the Osteria believe that one of the greatest sources of joy is what happens around a dinner table, so they aim to make their patrons feel the same

CQ recommends: Cozy up to the small bar, order a bottle of wine and make some new friends, and tell them about all of your great local finds from the day!

Essentials for your Cape Cod Beach Day

by Halle DavisWhat makes a perfect beach day? Is it the weather, the water, or finding a secluded spot to yourself? We tend to think it’s the outfit. Picking out the perfect beach look and packing up all your accessories is a sacred summer beach day ritual. Nail your beach look by shopping local for all your beach needs!

Start with your bathing suit and build your look from there. Because you’ll be in the suit for most of the day, pick something comfortable! For more info on how to find the perfect bathing suit for you, see our latest issue!

70’s Halter Top and Surfer Bottom, available at Chatham Clothing Bar

After selecting a bathing suit, pick out a cover up next. A cover up doesn’t necessarily need to match your suit, but keep in mind that many cover ups are a bit sheer. A cover up is great for transitional times, like a cookout on the beach after a day in the sun or getting a bite to eat after a long day. In that respect, choose a cover up that shows your personal style!

aed-518-1Rickshaw Embroidered Shift Dress, available at Design Works

Go with a neutral blanket or towel that will look good at the beach, at the park or at home! You don’t need to have special beach towels anymore – a simple towel in a fresh design will work well for sunbathing at the beach, laying out a picnic or drying off at home.IMG_6397

Artiga woven blanket, available at Homegrown Trades

A beach bag should be two things: big enough to hold a day’s worth of beach goodies and fun! Go for a bag with a cool print or funny text to add some more cheer to your beach outing. This lovely bag also doubles as a dose of local pride!

Tote bag, available at ARTichoke

Go for a classic look with your sunglasses – the investment will prove worthy if you can wear with anything. Go for shades that you can wear everywhere: at the beach, in the car, or around town. If you spend more, you’ll get better quality but if you stick to a budget you won’t be afraid to beat them up a bit. Whatever you’re looking for you can find them locally!

Blue Planet sunglasses, available at Adorn

Flip flops are the quintessential summer shoe, and assuch should be purchased with that in mind. Try to find a pair that you can wear from the beach to a dinner out. Durability and construction are important. Flimsy and cheap flip flops will cost you more money in the end to keep replacing them. Streamlining your look saves money and leaves more room in your beach bag for cheesy beach reads!

O’Neill Ojai River Sandals in white, available at Chatham Clothing Bar

Showing your Love for Cape Cod…in Style

by Halle Davis

We’ll admit it – there’s a lot of cheesy Cape Cod merchandise out there. If you want to rep the Cape with your personal style or keep a little piece of this sandbar with you and keep it cool, there are some stylish options out there!

  1. Wellfleet Market Bag from Salt Wellfleet

This charming tote is the result of a partnership between Salt Wellfleet and Apolis, a certified B-Corp lifestyle brand, and their Bangladesh Project which provides fair wage jobs to Bangladeshi women. This tote pays homage to the lower cape town in a simple and modern canvas construction with leather handles. We love its neutral look which adds a subtle hint of local pride to any outfit. Wear this tote to the beach, the farmer’s market or as an overnight bag. This bag is the perfect compliment to a summer outfit. Pair it with a maxi dress and sunhat for a day of shopping for a cool look or try it with jean shorts and a tank for a day at the beach.

  1. Cape Cod Necklace from Jewelry Studio of Wellfleet

image1 (1)

Although we are no strangers to Cape Cod jewelry, this subtle and delicate piece feels like a fresh update. The delicate silhouette of the cape is a lovely alternative to its obvious and garish counterparts. This little tribute to Cape Cod can be found at the Jewelry Studio of Wellfleet where it is handcrafted by local sisters, Jesse and Neile Horowitz. Grab the silver version for a classic look or wear the gold with a summer tan; either one adds sophistication to a look. We love this necklace with a lower neckline to make the necklace pop against the skin. This necklace works for both day and night look; try it both ways!

  1. Assorted Jewelry from Fisherman’s Daughter

Another way to accessorize your love for the Cape without overdoing it is with the jewelry at Fisherman’s Daughter in Chatham. Their playful assortment includes coordinate jewelry on nameplates with a brushed finish and CC pendant necklaces. The coordinates and “CC” designs allow for an understated and elegant tribute to the Cape without being too flashy or over-the-top. The subtlety of the jewelry at Fisherman’s Daughter will add a personal touch to your look without invoking “Look at me, I’ve been to Cape Cod!” vibes. We love the combination of the sterling silver offerings paired with a navy top or dress while the gold will stand out against white.

  1. Cape Love Tee from Artichoke

Rep the Cape with this charming tee from Artichoke that will ooze simplicity. The silhouette of Cape Cod is featured on the left side of the tee yet it’s far from obnoxious. Cape lovers will recognize the shape and applaude you for your local pride while others will insist your tee resembles a Rorschach test as they stand in line for tees that read “CAPE COD, MA” in large text. Artichoke is a local treasure trove of unique silk screened goods and funky jewelry. Started by Liz and Katie Escher as a mobile apparel-vending bus in 2013, Artichoke has quickly evolved into a brick and mortar hotspot of fun fashion for local shoppers.

Spring Essentials for the Effortless Girl

By Emma Childs

It’s pretty unanimous that no one wants to look like they’re trying too hard. People are hunting high and low to find pieces to send off that cool girl vibe, but this search usually only ends in distress. This effortless style is hard to define (and even harder to find) but here are some Spring staples that you can wear day-to-day that won’t look too forced.

I know, I know. To quote the queen of sass Miranda Presley herself, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. *eye roll* “, but florals in a darker shade are perfect for this season to contrast the norm and look fabulously undone. Darker florals keep it subtle and cool and a silhouette like the one pictured below is a fantastic way to appear natural, yet put together.

This beauty can be found at  Contrary Boutique and online here.

The Tunic dress:

Breezy dresses like this one ooze causal sophistication. The buttons keep the style mature but the drawstring allows for that nonchalance that is oh-so-desired. This girl looks fierce, lets be honest. When you wear one like this, you can’t help but strut.

This killer little number can be found on  Weekend’s website here.

Cropped Jacket:

No matter who you are, where you come from, or where you are going, the perfect cropped jacket makes it look like you are in control. When cut properly for one’s body type, cropped jackets possess that certain level of poise that any effortless girl seeks. Also like the one pictured below, light colors send a crisp and casual vibe that will stand out from the typical pastel’s of spring.

This killer jacket is from If The Shoe Fits in Orleans.

Striped Tee:

The striped tee is nothing controversial but when done right, it can turn heads and turn a maiden into a muse. Black and white stripes are commonly associated with Parisian style and we all know that the Parisian’s possess the ultimate nonchalant essence. The top below keeps it flowy and the accent of leather and the zipper add enough casual edge to make this one stand out.

Unknown-2This top can be purchased at Savvy on Main in Orleans.

A black jumpsuit is undoubtably fierce, it’s as simple as that. There is something about a killer jumpsuit that gives off a je-ne-sais-quoi appeal and acts as an instant confidence boost. If you can find the perfect fit, a jumpsuit might just possibly change your life. A sleeveless one like the one pictured below is perfect for spring to keep it cool and casual.

This fantastic jumpsuit can be found at Ports & Company.

Keep in mind that no matter what you are wearing, if you feel comfortable and confident, you will have an aura of modern insouciance. If you feel good in your clothes, it will show!

Who cares about the Red Carpet, anyway?

Red Carpet
The start of a new year marks the beginning of the Hollywood Awards season: the Golden Globes, the SAGs, Grammys, the BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, and of course the Oscars.

The Awards Season Red Carpet can have a huge effect on an actresses career (not a man’s, of course, but that is a topic for another day), as well as what you and I will wear in six months to a year.

When people question that statement, I often quote The Devil Wears Prada:
Oh, OK. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs, and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.”

Fashion is art. Fashion is cultural commentary. Fashion is a creative outlet. Fashion is necessary, because clothing is necessary. The red carpet informs fashion; fashion informs the red carpet.

Personally, I watch awards show season as if it is the playoffs with the Oscars representing the championship game. I get excited when I see a gorgeous gown. I get frustrated when someone is not dressed to their full potential (because they all have stylists AND access to the best fashions in the world). I also love to observe the popular styles, and predict which of them will become trends, as well as those that I hope to never see again.

A few of my observations from the awards seasons thus far. No one can pull off the wet, slicked back hair look. So, please stop trying. Please.

Even if you’re pregnant you can still look elegant on the fancy red carpet. You do not have to wear what is seemingly a curtain.

If you just gave birth, you will need to get an updated set of undergarments so your new boobs don’t hang below your waist.

Trends on the red carpet that we bet you a dollar you will see in stores in the near future:

Low plunging necklines…don’t worry, you can always wear a camisole underneath your dress or top if the plunge is too low;

and for those of you not into the low neckline? There are also super high necklines;

skirts, pants and blazers made from brocade – a great way to up the ante on your office style;

lace & sheer overlays and panels that add so much interest and elegance to any piece (I am in love with this trend);

these colors were all over the red carpet: metallics, purple, yellow, red, white, white….and more white and I expect to see more of them this Sunday at the Oscars, and in my closet soon!
